Climb Kilimanjaro

Route-by-route expeditions to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m: hut nights on Marangu, scenic camping on Machame and Lemosho, quieter northern approaches, and premium crater sleep-outs, briefed with the altitude, climate, and crew standards we use every season.

Classic east

Marangu Route (hut accommodations)

The only hut-based route on Kilimanjaro, communal A-frame nights at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo, a familiar eastern trail, and two clear duration choices. Ideal when you want beds instead of tents and a well-marked path with decades of established logistics.

Build my climb

Most popular

Machame Route (the Whiskey trail)

Camp-based and scenic: rainforest, Shira views, the Barranco Wall, and a southern-circuit summit approach. Seven days with a Karanga night remains our most requested Machame profile for first-time summit confidence.

High success

Lemosho Route (scenic west)

Remote western entry across the Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit. From condensed six-day pushes to the gold-standard eight-day acclimatisation package, chosen when scenery and buffer both matter.

Quieter north

Rongai Route (northern dry track)

The only standard trail starting near the Kenyan border, often drier than southern approaches, with Mawenzi Tarn scenery on longer profiles and a Marangu-side descent after summit.

Best buffer

Northern Circuit (longest route)

Circles the wild northern flanks for maximum terrain coverage and an exceptionally high safety and success buffer. The choice when leave days allow a full expedition rather than a compressed summit dash.

Steep and short

Umbwe Route (direct vertical challenge)

The steepest non-technical path, a direct ridge for fit, altitude-aware hikers only. We recommend it after an honest fitness conversation, not as a badge of bravado.

Alpine gateway

Shira Route (high altitude start)

Bypasses the long rainforest approach and places you onto the high plateau early, related to Lemosho, with bigger views sooner and a sharper first meeting with altitude.

Elite expeditions

Premium crater camping packages

High-end sleep-outs on the crater floor near 5,750 m after Uhuru Peak, for climbers who earn the night through pacing and health checks, and want the ash pit and full volcanic story.

Traveller questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from the Arusha desk, with links into the journeys and guides that belong with each question.

Ask the desk
Machame and Lemosho are the usual first-time camping trails: strong acclimatisation when you take enough days, and a scenic west-to-south walk. Marangu uses huts and is often chosen for a more sheltered night. Compare them in Machame vs Lemosho and browse all Kilimanjaro climbs before you pick a gate.
The difficulty is altitude and summit-night hours, not technical climbing. You walk on trails; you do not need ropes. Fitness, pacing, and extra acclimatisation days matter more than speed. Our guide Is Kilimanjaro hard to climb? is honest about temperatures, toilets, and the 5,895 m Uhuru Peak push.
Seven or eight days is the practical minimum for most guests who want a fair success chance. Five-day Marangu is shorter and harder on the body. Northern Circuit and longer Lemosho add acclimatisation. See duration tags on each climb package and ask us to lengthen rather than cut if your leave window allows.
Operators who rush five-day itineraries fail more guests. We favour longer profiles, slow walking, and turnaround rules when oxygen saturation or symptoms say stop. No ethical desk guarantees the summit. We do guarantee an honest brief, a crew that treats porters as staff, and a plan you can read in Machame or Lemosho detail.
January–March and June–October are the usual dry windows with clearer trails. April–May and November can be wetter, quieter, and still summitable with the right kit. Summit night is below freezing in every season. Pair the climb with a short safari only after you descend, not the night before the gate.
Layered insulation, a serious headlamp, four-season gloves, and broken-in boots matter more than brand-new fashion shells. We send a list with your quote and walk through it in Arusha or Moshi. Use the Kilimanjaro packing list as the working checklist, then rent what you do not want to fly with.
No. Kilimanjaro is a trek. Scrambling on scree at night is tiring, not alpine. If you have never walked consecutive days with a daypack, say so; we may add a day or steer you off Umbwe. Start on Machame or Lemosho rather than the steepest short routes.
Marangu sleeps in shared huts along a more direct trail. Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Shira, Umbwe, and the Northern Circuit camp in tents your crew pitches. Huts feel more sheltered; camps feel quieter and more scenic. Filter by route family on this Kilimanjaro page and open the briefing for overnight temperatures.
A fair climb pays and feeds the crew properly, limits loads, and does not treat summit as an excuse to understaff. We brief porter numbers with the itinerary. If ethical practice is a decision point for you, say so on Contact; it belongs in the quote, not a footnote after deposit.
Age alone is not a veto; medical clearance and recent walking fitness are. Solo guests take a private or small-group climb with a full crew so the mountain never feels like a lonely experiment. Tell us medications and recent treks on the trip planner. We would rather delay a summit than push a guest into rescue.
Safari after the descent is kinder: lungs recover on the plains, and you are not starting summit night already dusty and tired. A day trip from Moshi can fill a spare day before the gate. Bush-to-beach after both chapters lives on Zanzibar packages.
Travel insurance must cover trekking to 6,000 m and helicopter evacuation. Vaccinations follow your clinic, not a tour brochure. Acute mountain sickness can still happen to fit people; Diamox is a medical conversation, not a souvenir. We will still check your kit and pace on the mountain. Questions before you fly go to the Arusha desk.
Park fees, rescue fees, and crew wages are a large share of a fair climb. Cheap five-day quotes often cut porters, food, or days you need to acclimatise. Each package on this page shows a from-price spine; we then quote your dates and private versus group. Combine with a northern safari only after the descent is in the itinerary.
A night near the crater before or after Uhuru Peak is a premium, cold, high camp for guests who already handle altitude well. It is not a shortcut for first-timers on a short route. Ask for it only after we review your chosen trail. See premium options inside the climb catalogue and we will say if it is a vanity add-on for your fitness.
Share month, group size, recent trekking, and whether you want huts or camping. We send a route recommendation and a written inclusions list. Use Plan your trip or Contact. If you are still choosing trails, start with Machame vs Lemosho.
